Omaha Hi Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
