Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play.
