Omaha Hi Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand.
