Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an amazing range of betting choices and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low hand.
